Christmas Tree Decorations

Tinsel

Tinsel was invented in Germany around 1640. At the time, real silver was used, and machines were made to pull the silver out into wafer thin strips, making tinsel. The silver tarnished quickly in candlelight. People tried to come up with a way of making tinsel from lead and tin, but this was never really practical. Silver was used for tinsel right up to the middle of the 20th century

Glass Ornaments

In the 1870s, glass ornaments began being imported into Britain. It was then very stylish to have glass ornaments on the Christmas Tree, something of a status symbol.

Victorian Decorations
Were of a 'home-made' variety. Young ladies of the household would spend hours quilling snowflakes and stars, sewing pouches for gifts and making paper baskets with sugared almonds in them. Small bead decorations, fine drawn out silver tinsel came from Germany together with beautiful Angels to sit at the top of the tree. Candles were often placed into wooden hoops for safety.

PLEASE DO NOT contact us here at Anglotrees with enquiries about decorations.

We do not sell Christmas tree decorations. We recommend the Christmas Cabin website for more information on Christmas tree decorations.
